Why Heart Health Matters

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of Australia’s leading causes of death. But the good news is that many heart attacks, strokes, and related conditions can be prevented with early detection and simple lifestyle changes. Early detection through a Heart Health Check can help identify potential risks and allow for preventative measures to be taken.

What Is A Healthy Heart Check?

A Healthy Heart Check is a 20-minute Medicare-funded assessment (MBS Item 699), and a quick, evidence-based way to understand your risk of heart disease so you can take proactive steps to stay well.

At Goldfields Family Medical Centre, our GPs offer thorough Heart Health Checks to:

  • Investigate your CVD risk factors.
  • Calculate and record your CVD risk.
  • Manage your risk on an ongoing basis.

During a check, your GP and practice nurse will:

  • Take your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels.
  • Assess your lifestyle risk factors like diet, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, and BMI.
  • Give you a 5-year cardiovascular risk score (your chance of having a heart event in the next 5 years).
  • Provide personalised advice on how to lower your risk, including referrals if needed.

If you’re aged 45 and over—or 30 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples—and don’t already have a diagnosed heart condition, you’re still eligible for a Healthy Heart Check at Goldfields Family Medical Centre.

The check is recommended once every 12 months.

Why is a Heart Health Check Worth It?

Heart disease often develops silently, with no warning signs. A simple check today could help you avoid a serious event tomorrow.

The Healthy Heart Check isn’t just about ticking another box — it’s about giving you the knowledge and tools you need to protect your future. It’s a valuable tool in your preventive healthcare arsenal that will help you stay on top of your overall wellness.
